Sean Bowen Blog – My first Grade 1 and Ayr this weekend

Last weekend was questionably the best days racing I’ve ever had. I rode my first Grade 1 winner in Aintree on Grand National Day.

I rode If The Cap Fits for Harry Fry and the Rooney family in the Ryanair Stayers Hurdle. The horse shown a lot of guts to get his head back up on the line to win, I thought we’d lost it after jumping the last hurdle but he stuck his neck out and was extremely tough.

It’s nice to get such a high profile winner, especially on Grand National day for Harry Fry who has been a great supporter of mine and I was very lucky that Noel Fehily decided to retire before the end of the season so that I could get the opportunity to ride him.

The day before, Lisnagar Oscar ran another very good race on the back of Cheltenham to finish third in the Sefton Novices Hurdle behind Champ and Emitom who look to be two very nice horses.
I am currently on the way to Huntingdon to ride Toodlepip for Harry Fry in a Mares’ Maiden Hurdle, I have ridden her around Doncaster to finish fourth back in December, I am hopeful she will go well today, this will only be her 4th run under rules so she is still learning.

Tomorrow I make my way to Ayr to ride Beggar’s Wishes in the Hillhouse Quarry Listed Handicap Chase for Dad, it looks a competitive race and there are a couple of horses who have won last time out, Dad’s yard is in great form so hopefully, we can go well and be competitive.

It is the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival in Ayr this weekend and on Saturday, I will be staying up there to ride Doing Fine in the Scottish Grand National for Neil Mulholland, he finished 4th in this race last year and is of a lightweight of 10 stone so hopefully we can go a few places better this year.

In the Scottish Champion Hurdle, I am riding Pearl of the West for John McConnell, he is coming over from Ireland. I won a hurdle on him in Cheltenham back in October so I am familiar with the horse and looking forward to riding him again. I also have a ride for Gordon Elliott in the 2m Handicap Listed Chase on Veinard.
